Bach’s sacred oratorio for double choir, soloists and orchestra, composed for St Thomas’s Church in Leipzig in 1727. Bach composed this work in the language of his audience rather than Latin. This performance was sung in English.
'What a formidable challenge the St Matthew Passion is, but the Forest Choir rose to it magnificently - all the drama and the terrible pathos were there, and this listener had tears rolling down his cheeks at regular intervals.
The soloists and orchestra were superb, but the point is that musicians of this calibre will only work with choirs they respect and enjoy. An unforgettable evening.'
'It was such a pleasure singing the Matthew Passion with you on Saturday, and what a treat to be able to sit facing you and see you all. The choir sounded absolutely superb and the commitment with which you brought the narrative to life was wonderful to witness and be a part of, most especially the moment by heart: 'Truly this was the Son of God'. A fantastic performance of which I hope you are all very proud.'
